It is certain that the lack of television, resulted in numerous types and variations of games we see today. For instance, the Mayans used to play a game called pok-a-tok, utilizing a strong rubber ball and a ring put on a vertical pole.
Much like basketball today, a score would happen when a ball would browse through the ring. This game was a brutal one, resulting in numerous injuries and even loss of life.

  • Exterior latex paint with the color of your choice (optional).
  • 8-2” long #8 flat head wood screws (or use 8d nails)
  • 2-12” lengths of a 2×4 board (top legs).
  • 2-3” lengths of a 2×4 board (bottom legs).
  • 1-2’by 4’ piece 3/8” plywood (playing surface).

Making the Game

  1. Use a pencil to mark on the 2 foot by 4 foot piece of plywood the center of the six-inch hole you will be cutting.
  2. Use a compass to draw a six-inch circle.
  3. Drill a 3/8-inch hole in the board inside of the six-inch circle. This hole will be used so a hand-held jigsaw can be used to cut the six-inch hole.
  4. Use a jigsaw to cut the six-inch hole using the six-inch circle you made in Step 2.
  5. Attach the two top legs to the board using 2” long #8 flat head wood screws or 8d nail.If you are using wood screws, first drill 1/8” pilot holes.
  6. Similarly to Step 5, attach the two bottom legs to the board using wood screws or nails.
  7. Paint the playing surface.

Either paint the whole surface with one color or use your imagination and use several colors of paint.

Corn Toss Bags

Official corn hole bags are six inches square and filled with one pound of shelled corn or popcorn.
You will need 8 bags: four of one color and four of another color.

Corn hole bags are available at many big box and sporting goods stores.
While commercial corn hole bags are relatively expensive, you can also use a cheaper homemade substitute. For instance, you can use 4 pairs of small socks (such as ladies size 4-10), and put in one pound of shelled corn in each sock.
Inexpensive popcorn can also be used.
The tops of the filled socks can then be tied with two different colors of ribbon.

Decals For Game Boards

To complete the cornhole set, its common to add decals to the boards for whatever you like.
Since the game is associated so closely with tailgate pre game parties and cook-outs at NFL games, the most popular decals are of the football team you support.

Cornhole Rules

While official rules call for two boards, it’s not a necessity for home use. It is however recommended and makes the game more enjoyable.
The official rules call for the players to be at least 30 feet away from the box when making a toss, it may be more fun to shorten this distance to 20 feet.
Also, two people can play the game-you don’t need teams. Some of the official corn toss game rules should be kept, however. For instance, each player tosses four bags with the same color and gets three points if the bag goes through the hole.
The player gets one point if the bag is on the playing surface as long as no part of it is touching the ground.
The aim is to be the first to 21 points.
The player (or team) that gets the highest score in a round gets the opportunity to throw first in the next round. The game continues until the first player or team reaches 21 points or more. That player is the winner. Have fun!
